Candle Cradle

This is a new candle holder I built today. It combines a garage sale wooden printing block and the shade of an old metal lamp that I believe used to sit on my grandfather's desk in our house. I build a lot of furniture out of recycled materials, but it is extra special to me when I can incorporate things from previous family generations.

Candles have a particular quality to them that invoke a spiritual feeling. Homemade furniture does the same thing for me. It feels connected and meaningful to the present space and time. I build furniture that is made from materials that are often from a particular space that were "useless" otherwise. I breath new life into materials that otherwise would sit in landfills and become my child's problem when our landfills start to reach their limit.
'Candle Cradle' is a piece that I dedicate to Amy and I's first child, Taylor, who is happily floating around in the womb right now! It pays homage to familial generations, cradle-to-cradle thinking, creativity and material reuse, and craftsmanship.
