Something I have been meaning to do for a long time now is replace the light fixture in our playroom. I found the old one in the garage rafters years back and decided I liked it's dungeon-like wood and brass style. It had these funky yellow cracked glass light covers that were just an accident waiting to happen now that the room has become our kiddy playroom. So I created this piece that I lagged bolted to the ceiling so that it should never come crashing down even in an earthquake. This was my first light fixture and I learned a lot making it. My father-in-law helped me wire it up and I gained tons on new knowledge from an electrical guru. It was so much fun to have Amy help install it while Taylor watched and the flipping the switch for the first time. That day the room really began it's new life as playroom instead of a dining room. Check out the rest of the post for more info.
"Light Box" is my first light fixture design. The peice pictured is made from reclaimed shelves and the legs from an old nightstand. The night stand belonged to my grandparents who brought the piece from Michigan in 1984. I didn't like the style so I used part of it in this new piece so I can retain some of the sentimental value and bring life back to an unused piece.
The design makes some beautiful shadows when it is turned on and creates a heaviness to the room as it only castes substantial light on about half of the room down. Would be great for a pool table light, or a bar. I built this one for our children's play area and I think it will make for a cozy area for small kids as the ceiling is not fully illumniated and seeming lower.
This particular piece is build-to-order. I can recreate this design or I can tweak it as you'd like. I can also scale it to different sizes.
This piece requires bolting to the ceiling joists(like a wall stud, but in the ceiling)
